If you live in the Newfoundland & Labrador province, you could have a chance to get up to $10,000 in grants and rebates when switching from oil to electric heating appliances! Sounds intriguing?

Newfoundland Labrador Hydro

The Oil to Electric Rebate Program in Newfoundland can receive a rebate for up to $5,000 to help Canadians transition from oil to electric heating appliances. You could also receive another $5,000 from the Canada Greener Homes Program as well!

Later Edit: As of February 12th, 2024, the Canada’s Greener Homes Grant has officially ended and will no longer be accepting new applications. Homeowners who have successfully concluded their online registration and possess an application number are urged to expeditiously move ahead with their retrofit initiatives, as they will remain eligible for funding and ongoing support through the Canada Greener Homes portal. For all your home electrification needs, contact us at +1 800-458-1289 or sa***@1c********.com for personalized assistance.

Here is how to qualify for the Oil to Electric Rebate Program:

  • You must be the primary homeowner and your home must have an active electricity account. Rental homeowners can also qualify for the rebate.
  • Your property must be on a permanent foundation and is a primary residence within the province.
  • Only one oil to electric rebate will be issued for one eligible product.
  • Your home must have used at least 1,000 litres of oil in the last year before your application. A copy of the last 2 years of your oil consumption, shown on a statement or receipt from your oil company (on company letterhead) must be included with your application.
  • The installation of your new electric heat source must be completed after April 1, 2022.
  • All new applications will be accepted after April 1, 2022.
  • The electrical contractor must provide a copy of the permit.
  • The existing oil tank must be removed from the premises to qualify for the rebate. Residents with oil tanks that are no longer in use are responsible for having oil tanks properly cut and cleaned and then disposed of properly.
  • Before and after pictures will be required to qualify for the rebate, clearly showing the tank removal as proof.
  • All installers/electricians must show they are a registered business within the province with an HST registration number or proof they are registered with WorkplaceNL. A quote/final invoice from the registered business must be provided. If this isn’t provided, your application will be declined.
  • All related costs must be paid upfront by the applicant. Upon receipt of these final paid documents, your rebate cheque will be processed.

Canada Greener Homes Grant

How to qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant:

  • You are the primary homeowner of your property.
  • Your property should be more than 6 months old from when it was originally built.
  • The property is your primary home address.
  • The appliances have to be used to cool and heat the entire property, not just one area of your home.
  • It’s also important to note that you will buy and own the following appliances, not under a rent or leasing term.

Sounds interesting? Here’s how you can apply:

  • First, you must apply and wait for your application to be approved by the Natural Resources of Canada (NRCan).
  • Complete a pre and post retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, which can be worth an additional $600 in your grants.
  • During the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, you can review the recommendations made by your EnerGuide advisor and review which ones can work for your budget and renovation plans within your home.
  • Purchase your equipment and product from the approved list created by the Natural Resources of Canada (NRCan).
  • Complete a post-retrofit Energuide evaluation and submit the required documents online or via mail. After your evaluation, your EnerGuide advisor will tell you some instructions on how to control your appliances and how much more energy-efficient your home is.
  • It is important to note that any work regarding the grant must be done by March 2027.
  • You should keep all copies regarding the grant until March 31, 2028.
